Henryk Kress, PhD Candidate

Henryk Kress is a PhD student in Critical Music Studies. He previously studied jazz guitar performance at the University of Toledo (B.M.) and William Paterson University (M.M.), where his thesis focused on the music and performance practice of avant-garde pianist Andrew Hill. Henryk’s research interests include George Russell’s Lydian Chromatic Concept among other theoretical approaches to improvised music, particularly post-bop and free jazz, as well as Polish folk revival and intersections of jazz with so-called “world music.” Additional interests include phenomenology and continental philosophy, and he regularly performs as a guitarist around the NYC area.
