Assessment Symposium Keynote Speaker
Keynote Session - Real-time Student Assessment: Remaining on the Frontline of Your Students' Learning: Rooted in current research on learning and the dynamic processes of teaching and learning, this workshop presents guiding principles of and practices in a shared and on-the-ground approach to assessing students’ learning--from point of matriculation to point of graduation. A granular approach to monitoring students’ progress along the trajectory of a course, this assessment approach identifies and closes gaps in student learning as they occur or persist in real time. In contrast with other assessment approaches aimed at using assessment results to improve future students’ learning, real-time assessment prioritizes using assessment results to promote currently enrolled students’ equitable progress toward achieving course-, program-, and institution-level outcomes. With contributions from Dr. Rose Tirotta-Esposito, Director, SBU Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching, and Ms. Diana Voss, Director, SBU Academic Technology Services.
To practice building real-time assessment approaches into your course or module design, Peggy asks that participants bring current syllabi and/or plans for new face-to-face, fully online, or hybrid courses. Specifically, this workshop focuses on:
-
-
-
Broadening your understanding of the range of challenges students face as they learn and apply their learning to help individual students surface and address the underlying causes of their learning challenges or obstacles.
-
Integrating specific types of assessment into the design of your course or module to closely monitor and address the needs of students along the trajectory of a course and to engage students in assessment as a component of their learning processes.
-
Realizing the direct benefits of your assessment approaches: (1) providing real-time evidence of the efficacy of your educational practices that may trigger the nimble use of other practices to address the diverse ways in which students learn and (2) longitudinally developing students’ accountability for improving their patterns of underperformance.
-
Extending your awareness of the range of research- informed teaching and learning strategies that are readily available now online and in print to build a repertoire of educational practices and interventions to help students overcome the diverse learning challenges they face.
-
Scheduling in timely discussions of currently enrolled students’ learning progress at program- and institution-levels.
-
Developing awareness of technology-enabled assessment capabilities built into Brightspace that provide immediate access to and visual representation of assessment results to you and your students, opening up opportunities for timely discussions (1) with students about their progress and (2) with colleagues about currently enrolled students’ equitable progress toward attaining program- or institution- level outcomes.
