The San Francisco Jazz Collective (SFJAZZ Collective), a group of eight of the most indemand artists in jazz, boasts a roster that changes annually. The players set aside their numerous other high-profile projects and devote all their time and energy to the Collective, touring for multiple weeks each year. Some will know Stefon Harris from other Staller Center dates—he and his band Blackout played the venue in 2006, and he was with the Kenny Barron Quintet in 2004.

In the past, the musicians in the Collective have played the music of Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, Thelonious Monk and Wayne Shorter. In 2010- 2011, Horace Silver is the jazz luminary they celebrate. Some of the most enduring tunes in jazz are by composer and piano man Horace Silver—“Song for my Father,” “Que Pasa,” and “Sister Sadie”—earthy, soulful, swinging and full of the blues.

MERCHANTS OF BOLLYWOOD

Saturday, October 30, 2010 at 8:00pm

Main Stage - $42

A dazzling dance spectacular from Mumbai arrives on American stages, bringing original music and choreography from the biggest Bollywood movies past and present. Beautiful dancers in over 1,000 glittery costumes and jewelry bring to life a tale inspired by the life of Vaibhavi Bhavi Merchant, the musical’s choreographer, and based on the true story of Bollywood’s famed Merchant family dynasty of filmmakers and choreographers.

The plot of conflict between Ms. Merchant and her grandfather about her career choice, breaking free of family tradition and expectation and becoming Indian film’s leading choreographer is used as an opportunity to retrace the history of the Hindi film industry. In “The Merchants of Bollywood,” high-octane music and authentic classical Indian dance are mated with Western dynamics of disco, acrobatics, hip-hop, and jazz interspersed with genuinely comic interludes.

 CHRISTOPHER O'RILEY -

OUT OF MY HANDS

MUSIC FROM RAVEL  TO RADIOHEAD

Saturday April 2, 2011 at 8:00pm

Recital Hall - $34

Since his original appearance at the Staller Center as a rising star in the 1991-1992 season, classical pianist Christopher O’Riley has gone on to become one of the leading American new-age pianists, touring extensively as a recitalist and chamber musician and appearing with every major orchestra. He is the host of the popular NPR music program, From the Top, and is well known for his eloquent musings on music and popular culture.

Mr. O’Riley’s latest performances stretch the piano beyond the classical repertoire and into the rich uncharted territory of contemporary and alt-rock. Since he announces the program from the stage, it allows him to share discoveries and explore paths in and out of this wealth of material. The music flows seamlessly from one genre to another, from the familiar to the fresh, from Maurice Ravel to Radiohead.

Spring Awakening, the breakthrough Broadway show that won the 2007 Tony Award for Best Musical, comes to Staller Center for one memorable night on its national tour. Called “brave, haunting and electrifying,” it is a unique rock musical about young love, sexual urges, and repression brought to painful life.

Spring Awakening is set in Germany, 1891, a world where the prudish grown-ups hold all the cards. The beautiful young Wendla explores the mysteries of her body, and wonders aloud where babies come from. The brilliant and fearless young Melchior interrupts a mind-numbing Latin drill to defend his buddy Moritz—a boy so traumatized by puberty he can’t concentrate on anything. The uniformed schoolboys rock out with fervor and scream to be heard. And a passionate, fumbling romance changes characters’ lives irrevocably.

The musical is based on a controversial German play by the same name so daring in its depiction of teenage self-discovery it was banned from the stage and not performed in its complete form in English for nearly 100 years.

Spring Awakening, a show for mature audiences, is explicit in bringing dark and difficult themes to the stage. The award-winning music is by rock composer Duncan Sheik, with choreography by the acclaimed Bill T. Jones.
