"She gave the impression not so much of
playing the violin as of being the violin. The silken purity of her tone defies the law of
physics..." Mark Swed, Los Angeles Times.
Staller Center welcomes Midori to our intimate
Recital Hall. The violinist made her historic
debut at
the age of 11
with the New
York
Philharmonic
on New Year’s
Eve, 1982,
and won the
Avery Fisher
Prize in 2001.
Now Midori
commissions
new works
from composers and plays contemporary
pieces as well as classical masterpieces. She
has a record of achievement that sets her
apart as a master musician, an innovator, and
a champion of the developmental potential
of children, bringing music education
programs to thousands of school children in
New York City and beyond each year. Midori’s
performance schedule is balanced between
recitals, chamber music performances and
appearances with the world’s most prestigious
orchestras. In her performance at
Staller Center this season, Midori will present
an exciting all-contemporary program chosen
to please classical music lovers.
"For a very long time I have studied and enjoyed the works of contemporary
composers. In the last couple years, I felt the time was right to create a
program of new music for public performance. After a great deal of research
and fascinating listening, I have chosen five compositions which I believe
work particularly well together musically, and will perform them on tour in
the U.S. during the 2005-06 season. One of the most enjoyable aspects of
playing recently composed music is that I feel myself to be an integral
part of actually creating the performance tradition for these compositions!
I think audiences will be enthralled at the variety of sounds, textures and
voices they will hear in this program, which features works by Judith Weir,
Alexander Goehr, György Kurtág, Witold Lutoslawski, and Isang Yun. I invite
all audience members to visit my website (www.GoToMidori.com), where you
will find a newsletter written specifically for you. The newsletter - in
four installments over February and March of 2006 - as well as program
notes, which can also be found on the website (click on MUSIC NOTES), are
designed to provide an open door to understanding this new music. I'm
really looking forward to joining you, the audience, in this journey of
discovery of the music written by our contemporaries. -Midori"
