“On the Road to Glory” weaves together the spirituals Amazing Grace; Steal Away; and Swing Low, Sweet Chariot with pieces by Nina Simone and Duke Ellington as well as poetry by Langston Hughes, Paul Lawrence Dunbar, Gwendolyn Brooks and others. “The Princely Players give spirituals the royal treatment,” notes an admirer. The eight-member Nashville-based ensemble traces the black experience from life in Africa through slavery and emancipation to the civil rights movement through exciting, gut-wrenching theater. The Princely Players have brought the music of struggle and hope to life on the BBC, TNN, National Public Radio’s Wade in the Water series, and on the Time-Life Civil War recordings.
