Staller Center continues its annual tradition of presenting an exciting evening of folk music with three very distinct artists. Returning to Staller this season, Susan Werner, one of those rare finds, a singer/songwriter who sings as well as she plays as well as she writes. A classically trained vocalist, she turned her back on lieder and light opera for the joys of smoky clubs and the chance to sing her own wry, intelligent songs. She writes of the tricky business of being a thirty-something single woman with sharp, funny, compassionate lyrics. Toshi Reagon sites her musical abilities from her family as both parents were members of The Freedom Singers, a folk group that sprung from the Civil Rights movement. Her rich musical heritage led her to become saturated in many traditional styles of music, feeding her desire to explore a wide range of music. Ms. Reagon's musical style transcends classification, but expresses a political consciousness that is as ingrained in her music as the multiple genres she embraces. Toshi often leaves the stage with the audience clapping and screaming for more. Lucy Kaplansky started out singing in Chicago bars when she was barely out of high school and eventually moved to New York. With a beautiful flair for harmony Lucy was everybody's favorite singing partner and she appeared with many other singers on their albums. An acclaimed songwriter in her own right, Kaplansky has her own distinctive blend of warmth, power and vulnerability. You don't have to choose - you can hear them all.
